Lost, between sunrise and sunset…
Horace Mann quotation from his Writings, published in 1872.
In Little Town on the Prairie (Chapter 21, “The Madcap Days”), Laura doesn’t worry about sacrificing precious study hours to enjoy time spent with friends from school. Yet she realizes the truth in Horace Mann’s words, which Laura Ingalls Wilder slightly mis-quotes in her text. Horace Mann (1796-1859) was an American education reformer and abolitionist. The line Laura quoted can be found in Thoughts Selected from the Writings of Horace Mann, published in 1872.
“Lost, between sunrise and sunset, / One golden hour, set with sixty diamond minutes. / No reward is offered, for it is gone forever.” (LTP 21)
