Carrie was frightened, too. Her eyes were very large in her thin face, and she whispered to herself, “‘Chisel in hand stood the sculptor boy,'” while Laura tied on her hair ribbon. \u2013 Little Town on the Prairie, Chapter 24, “The School Exhibition”<\/em><\/p>\n

     
\nC<\/span>arrie Ingalls recites this poem from the Independent Fifth Reader at the school exhibition in De Smet (see Little Town on the Prairie<\/em>, Chapter 24, “The School Exhibition”). “The Sculptor Boy” was written by George Washington Doane (1799-1859), American writer and Episcopal bishop. The Sculptor Boy<\/p>\n

Chisel in hand stood a sculptor boy,
\nWith his marble block before him;
\nAnd his face lit up with a smile of joy
\nAs an angel dream passed o’er him.
\nHe carved that dream on the yielding stone
\nWith many a sharp incision.
\nIn Heaven’s own light the sculptor shone,\u2013
\nHe had caught that angel vision.<\/p>\n

Sculptors of life are we, as we stand
\nWith our lives uncarved before us,
\nWaiting the hour, when, at God’s command,
\nOur life-dream passes o’er us.
\nLet us carve it, then, on the yielding stone,
\nWith many a sharp incision:\u2013
\nIts heavenly beauty shall be our own,\u2013
\nOur lives, that angel vision.<\/p>\n
