Thomson in 1852. It was first published by Oliver Ditson in Boston, Massachusetts. The song tells of the mourning of the bereaved lover; it was popular with both Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War, as it expressed the feelings of loneliness and anxiety of the soldiers as well as civilians.<\/p>\n<p>In both the published version and existing manuscript for <em>On the Banks of Plum Creek<\/em><em>, Laura Ingalls Wilder prefaces Pa&#8217;s beginning to sing three lines of the song with the title: &#8220;Pa began to sing about sweet Lily Dale.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><div class='et-box et-shadow'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><div class='one_half'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>LILLY DALE<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>1. &#8216;Twas a calm still night, and the moon&#8217;s pale light,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Shone soft o&#8217;er hill and vale,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>When friends with grief, stood around the death bed,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Of my poor lost Lilly Dale.<\/p>\n<p>[chorus} Oh! Lilly, sweet Lilly,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Dear Lilly Dale,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Now the wild rose blossoms o&#8217;er her little green grave,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>&#8216;Neath the trees in the flow&#8217;ry vale.<\/p>\n<p>2.
