He whistled cheerfully while he worked, and then he sang&#8230;  &#8212; Little House in the Big Woods, Chapter 6, &#8220;Two Big Bears&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"float: left; color: #6384bd; font-size: 44px; line-height: 35px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; font-family: Times, serif, Georgia;\">K<\/span>itty Wells was was written by Thomas Sloan, Jr., with music by Charles E. Atherton. It was first published by G.B. Demerest in New York City, 1858. Atherton was a violinist, tenor singer, and songwriter from Patterson, New Jersey. He sang in church choirs and led a men&#8217;s quartet called the American Bards.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><div class='one_half'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>KITTY WELLS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. You ask: what makes this darkey weep?\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Why he, like others, am not gay?\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/> What causes the tear to flow down his cheek,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>From early morn till close of day?\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>My story, darkies, you shall hear;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>For, in my memory fresh it dwells:\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>It will cause you all to drop a tear\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>On the grave of my Sweet Kitty Wells.<\/p>\n<p>[chorus] While the birds were singing in the morning,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>And the myrtle and the ivy were in bloom,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>And the Sun on the hill was a dawning:\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>It was then we laid her in the tomb.<\/p>\n<p>2. I never shall forget the day\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>That we, together, roamed the dells;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>I kissed her cheek, and named the day\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>That I should marry Kitty Wells.\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>But Death came in my cabin door,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>And took, from me, my joy and pride;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>And when I found she was no more,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>I laid my banjo down, and cried.<\/p>\n<p>3.
