Born in Ohio, as an adult Hamby worked for Root &amp; Cady music publishers. The lyrics of &#8220;My Darling Nellie Gray&#8221; tell the story of lovers separated due to the evils of slavery. It immediately became a favorite, although today Hamby is probably best remembered for composing the Christmas classic: &#8220;Up on the Housetop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><div class='one_half'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>DARLING NELLY GRAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a low green valley by the old Kentucky shore\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Where we&#8217;ve whiled many happy hours away,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>A-sitting and a-singing by the little cottage door,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Where lived my darling Nelly Gray.<\/p>\n<p>[chorus]\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Oh my poor Nelly Gray, they have taken you away\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>And I&#8217;ll never see my darling any more.\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>I&#8217;m a-sitting by the river and I&#8217;m weeping all the day\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>For you&#8217;re gone from the old Kentucky shore.<\/p>\n<p>When the moon had climbed the mountain, and the stars were shining too,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Then I&#8217;d take my darling Nellie Gray.\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>We would float down the river in my little red canoe,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>While my banjo so sweetly I would play.<\/p>\n<p>One night I went to see her but &#8220;she&#8217;s gone&#8221; the neighbors say,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>The white man bound her with his chain,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>They have taken her to Georgia to wear her life away,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>As she toils in the cotton and the cane.<\/p>\n<p>My canoe is under water and my banjo is unstrung\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>I&#8217;m tired of living anymore;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>My eyes shall look downward and my songs shall be unsung\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>While I stay on the old Kentucky shore.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes are getting blinded and I cannot see my way,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Hark! there&#8217;s someone knocking at my door;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Oh!
