{"id":4315,"date":"2003-05-29T19:16:44","date_gmt":"2003-05-29T23:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pioneergirl.com\/blog\/?p=4315"},"modified":"2016-12-07T19:40:08","modified_gmt":"2016-12-08T00:40:08","slug":"captain-jinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pioneergirl.com\/blog\/archives\/4315","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Captain Jinks&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAPTAIN JINKS<br \/>\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pioneergirl.com\/tbl_bullet.gif\"\/> <em>By the time Laura and Mary were snug in their trundle bed, Pa and the fiddle were both singing, while he kept time with his foot on the floor&#8230; &#8212; Little House in the Big Woods, Chapter 7, &#8220;The Sugar Snow&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pioneergirl.com\/tbl_bullet.gif\"\/> <em>Pa&#8217;s fiddle laughed and sang&#8230; &#8212; On the Banks of Plum Creek, Chapter 41, &#8220;Christmas Eve&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>MISTRESS JINKS<br \/>\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pioneergirl.com\/tbl_bullet.gif\"\/> <em>Then Pa&#8217;s fiddle twinkled short, gay little notes, and he sang&#8230; Pa nodded at Laura, and she went on singing with the fiddle&#8230; &#8212; By the Shores of Silver Lake, Chapter 15, &#8220;The Last Man Out&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"float: left; color: #6384bd; font-size: 44px; line-height: 35px; padding-top: 3px; padding-right: 3px; font-family: Times, serif, Georgia;\">W<\/span>ords to &#8220;Captain Jinks&#8221; are by William Horace Lingard (1839-1927); Music by T. Maclagan, 1868. The song was first published by William A. Pond in 1868. Lingard was a British-born actor and singer who made his debut in the United States in New York, 1868. &#8220;Captain Jinks&#8221; was written for his own comedy company; the original performance was by a chorus of girls in military costume.<\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately after its release, Will S. Hays wrote lyrics to a companion song about the captain&#8217;s supposed wife: &#8220;Mistress Jinks of Madison Square,&#8221; published in 1869. It was also wildly popular as a square dance tune and a popular song of soldiers in the decades after the 1870s. It is this tune that Laura sings for Pa in <em>By the Shores of Silver Lake<\/em>, Chapter 15.<\/p>\n<p>William Shakespeare Hays (1837-1907) was born and died in Louisville, Kentucky. Hays wrote more than 350 songs in his lifetime, including &#8220;Evangeline&#8221; (1862) and &#8220;Little Old Cabin in the Lane&#8221; (1871).<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><div class='one_half'>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>CAPTAIN JINKS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. I joined my corps when twenty one,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Of course I thought it capital fun,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>When the enemy came then off I run,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>I wasn&#8217;t cut out for the army.\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>When I left home, mama, she cried,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>Mama, she cried, mama, she cried,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>When I left home, mama, she cried,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>&#8220;He ain&#8217;t cut out for the army.&#8221;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>(spoken: No, she thought I was too young, but then, I said, ah! mama,)<\/p>\n<p>[chorus] I&#8217;m Captain Jinks, etc.<\/p>\n<p>3. The first day I went out to drill,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>The bugle sound made me quite ill,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>At the Balance step my hat it fell,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>And that wouldn&#8217;t do for the army.\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>The officers they all did shout,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>They all cried out, they all did shout,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>The officers they all did shout,\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>&#8220;Oh that&#8217;s the curse of the army.&#8221;\n<br class=\"clearfix\"\/>(spoken: Of course my had did fall off, but, ah! nevertheless,)<\/p>\n<p>[chorus] I&#8217;m Captain Jinks, etc.<\/p>\n<p>4.
