The nineteenth letter of the English alphabet. It is a consonant, and is often called a sibilant, from its hissing sound. It has two uses; one to express a mere hissing, as in Sabbath<\/em>, such<\/em>, sin<\/em>, this<\/em>, thus<\/em>; the other a vocal hissing, precisely like that of z<\/em>, as in muse<\/em>, wise<\/em>, pronounced muze<\/em>, wize<\/em>. It generally has its hissing sound at the beginning of all proper English words, but in the mdidle and end of words its sound is to be known only by usage. Sabbath<\/strong> – A day of rest; one day in seven appointed for rest or worship, the observance of which was enjoined upon the Jews in the Decalogue, and has been continued by the Christian church with a transference of the day observed from the last to the first day of the week; \u2013 called also Lord’s day<\/em>, in commemoration of the resurrection of Christ upon that day. Sabbath is not strictly synonymous with Sunday. Sabbath denotes the institution; Sunday is the name of the first day of the week. The Sabbath of the Jews is on Saturday, and the Sabbath of the Christians on Sunday. scale<\/strong>, singing \u2013 The gamut, or graduated series of all the tones, ascending or descending, from the key-tone to its octave, and which may be repeated through any number of octaves. The diatonic scale is graduated by steps and half steps (tones and semitones), and completes itself in seven tones, ascending thus: do<\/em>, re<\/em>, mi<\/em>, fa<\/em>, sol<\/em>, la<\/em>, si<\/em>, the do<\/em> which follows being the recommencement of the same scale or series in a higher octave; the chromatic scale is graduated all the way by half steps, and completes itself in twelve tones. scalp<\/strong> \u2013 That part of the instrument of the head usually covered with hair; hence, the skin of the head, or a part of it, with the hair belonging to it, torn off, as by the Indian warriors of North America, as a token of victory over an enemy.<\/p>\n

scalp-lock \/ scalplock<\/strong> \u2013 A long tuft of hair left on the crown of the head by the warriors of some tribes of American Indians.<\/p>\n

scarlet fever<\/strong> \u2013 A contagious febrile disease, characterized by inflammation of the fauces, and a scarlet rash, appearing usually on the second day, and ending in desquamation about the sixth or seventh day. The fauces is the posterior part of the mouth.<\/p>\n

scandal<\/strong> \u2013 n<\/em>. Offense caused or experienced; reproach or reprobation called forth by what is regarded as wrong, heinous, or flagrant; imputed disgrace. Equity<\/em>. Any thing alleged in the court which is impertinent and reproachful to any person, or which derogates from the dignity of the court, or in contrary to good manners.<\/p>\n

school<\/strong> \u2013 A place for learned intercourse and instruction; an institution for learning; an educational establishment; a place for acquiring knowledge and mental training. Hence, an institution of learning of a lower grade, below a college or university; a place of primary instruction; an establishment for the instruction of young children; as, a primary school; a common school. sheep<\/strong> \u2013 A small ruminant quadruped, valued for its flesh and wool, the common sheep being Ovis aries, of which there are many varieties. The sheep is allied to the goat, having, like it, no tear-pits, but has certain characteristic differences, as in being of a harmless temper and very timid, in having the horns turned to the sides, with the points forward and not keeled in front, in the absence of odor in the male, and in its habit of running a tilt in fighting.<\/p>\n

sheriff<\/strong> \u2013 The chief officer of a shire or county, to whom is entrusted the execution of the laws. In the United States, sheriffs are elected by the legislature, or by the citizens, or appointed and commissioned by the executive of the State. The office is mostly ministerial. The sheriff, by himself or his deputies, executes civil and criminal process through out the county, has charge of the jail and prisoners, attends courts, and keeps the peace. His judicial authority is generally confined to ascertaining damages on writs of inquiry and the like.<\/p>\n
