It has but one sound, which is the same as that of <em>k<\/em>, or <em>c hard<\/em>. It is, therefore, a superfluous letter. It is always followed by a <em>u<\/em>, the two letters together being pronounced like <em>kw<\/em>, except in some words in which the <em>u<\/em> is silent; as, <em>quake<\/em>, <em>quack<\/em>, <em>pique<\/em>, pronounced <em>kwake<\/em>, <em>kwack<\/em>,<em> peek<\/em>.
