The seventeenth letter of the English alphabet. It has but one sound, which is the same as that of k<\/em>, or c hard<\/em>. It is, therefore, a superfluous letter. It is always followed by a u<\/em>, the two letters together being pronounced like kw<\/em>, except in some words in which the u<\/em> is silent; as, quake<\/em>, quack<\/em>, pique<\/em>, pronounced kwake<\/em>, kwack<\/em>, peek<\/em>. The English name of the letter, cue<\/em>, is said to be from the French queue<\/em>, a tail, the form being the same as that of O<\/em> with a tail added. \u2014 Webster, 1882<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
