Its shape is evidently borrowed from that of the Oriental <em>lamed<\/em>, or <em>lomad<\/em>, nearly coinciding with the <em>Samaritan<\/em>. <em>L<\/em> has only one sound in English, as in <em>like<\/em>, <em>canal<\/em>. At the end of monosyllables, it is often doubled, as in <em>fall<\/em>, <em>full<\/em>, <em>tell<\/em>, <em>bell<\/em>; but not after diphthongs and digraphs, as in <em>foul<\/em>, <em>fool<\/em>, <em>prowl<\/em>, <em>growl<\/em>, <em>foal<\/em>. In English words, the terminating syllable <em>le<\/em> is unaccented, the <em>e<\/em> is silent, and <em>l<\/em> forms a syllable by itself, as in <em>able<\/em>, <em>eagle<\/em>, pronounced
