In some words, mostly derived or introduced from foreign languages, <em>h<\/em> following <em>c<\/em> and <em>g<\/em> indicates that those consonants have the hard sound before <em>e<\/em>,<em> i<\/em>, and <em>y<\/em>, as in <em>chemistry<\/em>, <em>Ghent<\/em>; in some others it has the sound of <em>ch<\/em>, as in <em>chicane<\/em>. \u2014 Webster,
