hardscrabble school
I heard that the Almanzo Wilder museum in NY has plans to renovate the Hardscrabble School.

Interesting, especially since the real Hardscrabble School was in Spring Valley, Minnesota.

the last mile

Sometimes a line from a "Little House" book pops into your head the second you see something in a store. And then, of course, you have to buy it.

That's what happened today when I saw the chocolate cigars. POP. Almanzo and Cap in the Loftus Store. Almanzo has helped settle the bag of wheat onto Charles Ingalls' shoulder.

"I bet you a cigar I can beat you in a game of checkers," Almanzo then said to Cap, and they went up the street to the drugstore. (The Long Winter, Chapter 29, "The Last Mile")

Made by Thompson Brands (thompsoncandy.com), pure milk chocolate cigars come with three different band styles: blue, pink, and "bet you a cigar."

Checkers, anyone?
